Illegal Tire Dumping on Southwest Atlanta Councilmembers' Agenda

A city committee on Tuesday will review a proposal by several city officials to establish "new tire commission legislation."

Three southside Atlanta City councilmembers want to establish a commission that would work to reduce the problem of illegal tire dumping in area neighborhoods.

The city's Committee for Community Development and Human Resources will review the proposal at 12:30 p.m. Tues., May 19, in Committee Room No. 2, at City Hall, 55 Trinity Ave. The legislation was introduced Mon., May 2, by several councilmembers including Joyce Sheperd, C.T. Martin and Michael Julian Bond, according to an e-mail news release from the city.

“The illegal dumping of tires, trash, and other debris is a huge issue in our communities,” said Sheperd, who recently hosted an Earth Day tire cleanup in which volunteers reported collecting some 2,000 tires from south and southwest Atlanta neighborhoods. “This annual event is our way of education our neighborhoods on the importance of a clean healthy community and combating the issue of the illegal dumping of tires.”
