Southwest, West Side Input Sought Thursday on One-Cent Sales Tax, Beltline Project

Special Beltline Meeting for southwest Atlanta on 2012 Georgia Transit Vote Thursday at West Hunter Baptist.

Atlanta Beltline Inc. will meet with Cascade area residents Thursday to review proposed light rail and streetcar lines that voters could help fund under a 2012 one-cent sales tax increase.

The meeting—one of a series across the city this month—is 6:30 p.m. at West Hunter Street Baptist Church, 1040 Abernathy Blvd., near the Mall West End. A second great Cascade meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Mon. at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd.

Beltline backers are moving quickly to meet a March 30 deadline for local governments to submit proposed transportation projects to the state for inclusion in a Transportation Investment Act (TLA) transit improvement plan.

In 2012, Georgia voters will decide whether the Beltline's rail and streetcar proposal, and other transportation projects, should be funded by an additional one-cent sales tax.

The Beltline is a planned 22-mile long ring of transit, trails, parks and development around 45 intown Atlanta neighborhoods. It represents the city's effort to guide development over the next several decades into urban developments that are stable and compact.
