Why Has the Program that put Cops in Foreclosed Homes Stopped?

Do you remember the excitement as the program started to launch?

At a recent NPU-T meeting, the topic of selling foreclosed homes to the city so that they could put Police families in them came up because neighbors were discussing all of the crime and vandalism that occurs in a foreclosure.

To much of the meeting room's surprise, residents were informed that the program has been put on a hiatus if not stopped completely.  No longer was it an option for neighbors to try to propose properties for police officers to move into.

ADA Butler broke the news to the room, but was careful to try to explain why the program needed a second look. "It put the DA's office in the business of real estate," she said and that was never the intention.

One of the community members agreed that the program can stand some changes, but was adamant that the community needs this program and said that neighborhoods would help the DA office administer a program like this so that the DA's office would not be in the business of real estate.

We will see what further discussions may come from this.

The Atlanta Police Foundation runs a program to place police officers in rental properties at greatly reduced or free rates. The Atlanta Police Foundation has been doing this for a number of years with great success. With some cooperation from the DA Office, the Foundation could take this program over. If the community is truly concerned about making this program a success, there are two things I would suggest: 1) Contact the Atlanta Police Foundation and the DA's Office and become active in creating a solution. This does not mean simply calling and letting someone else do the work. The results you want are a direct reflection of the effort you put forth. 2) Volunteer your time to the Atlanta Police Foundation. In doing so, you will get to know the Foundation team, the people in the Police Command that can help you with your concerns and you will be active in creating a solution rather than just asking for one. Every opportunity we have to improve our community is an opportunity for you to do your part, to rally your neighbors and to make change happen. If you are too busy to do your part, too busy to volunteer and too busy to help, you can be sure the criminals are even busier making sure they are doing their part.

The residents within NPUT are more active than ever. However there is a time to hold all these departments to doing what they should do and are paid to do. My volunteer capacity and volunteers are stretched to the limit. Our quality of life has not enhanced due to these efforts but have diminished and drained. If one more peron ask for volunteers in positions they have paid staff for, I will scream!
