Two Dozen Brown Middle School Students Sent to Hospital Due to Severe Itching

School health officials do not know what caused the itching.

Reports have surfaced that at least 21 Brown Middle School students have been taken to Hughes-Spalding Hospital due to severe itching.  Most of the children transported were all in the same class, yet it is still unclear what has caused the itching.

11Alive reports that, "officials said there were no hives or rashes reported, but a lot of itching among the students."

The transferring of those affected students to the hospital was taken as a precaution.  The school day was not affected in any other way.

Calls to Brown Middle School were not answered.  Cascade Patch has seen a tweet saying that most of the students affected were in the science room at the time.

The Atlanta Fire Department spokesperson said, "Atlanta Fire Rescue Department units were dispatched today at 12:15 p.m. to Brown Middle School (765 Peeples Street SW) on a medical call."  The actual number of students transported to the hospital was 29, said Captain Marian McDaniel, PIO.

Captain McDaniel went on to indicate that, the "Hazardous Materials units were called and AFRD personnel evacuated the entire third floor as a precaution. Air monitoring was conducted to test for a variety of toxins, including carbon monoxide. Tests results are negative at this time."

APS Emergency Response team and Atlanta Fire are still investigating what was the cause.
