APS Appoints New Deputy Superintendent

Appointed on Monday, Steve Smith, former Fulton County Schools principal and vice president for community affairs at Turner Broadcasting, is the new Deputy Superintendent/Chief of Staff.

The Atlanta Public Schools announced Monday the appointment of Steve Smith as the new deputy superintendent/chief of staff.

Smith replaces Sharron Pitts who is currently the district's interim general counsel.

According to a news release from APS spokesman Keith Bromery, Smith has held executive positions with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Georgia Public Broadcasting. He is also a former principal and teacher in Fulton County Schools.

Smith holds an MBA and Master's Degree in Educational Management from the University of Georgia and he is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta and Leadership Georgia. He serves on numerous boards including the Georgia Chamber of Commerce (vice president, membership) and the Atlanta Business League.

"Steve brings to APS substantial leadership and management experience in both the private and public sectors, including an education background as a teacher and principal," Superintendent Erroll B. Davis Jr. said in the release. "He is well positioned to work closely with me to lead APS during this period of transition."
