Celebrating Academic Achievement at Cascade United Methodist

The Rev. Dr. Albert Mosley was keynote speaker during occasion.

Cascade United Methodist Church celebrated student achievement and the institutions of higher learning that have educated legions of southwest Atlanta community leaders.

At the 11 a.m. service for "United Methodist Student Sunday," keynote speaker the Rev. Dr. Albert Mosley offered a sermon entitled "Press Towards the Mark."

"Education is one thing within society that allows one to cross class lines and racial lines," Mosley said. "Education is a powerful entity."

Furthermore, he recalled a quote from his mother, "People can take things away from you. However, once you get something in your mind (i.e. learning to read or a trade), they can not touch it."

Mosely encouraged students to continue to depend on their spirit and faith as they gain knowledge.

The Rev. Dr. Marvin Moss, Senior Pastor of Cascade United Methodist Church, received a standing ovation after recapping the presentation of $22,000 to Dr. Stanley Pritchett at the 8 a.m. service to help Morris Brown College in relinquishing a $10 million debt. 

The member's support help close the amount of $500,000 that the U.S. Department of Justice requested the college to pay back. 

Also, Mosley acknowledged the 12 predominately black colleges within the United Methodist assembly that have supported the higher education of black students. They include: Clark-Atlanta University; Dillard University; Bethune-Cookman University; Bennett College for Women; Rust College; Paine College; Philander Smith College; Meharry Medical College; Wiley College; Huston-Tillotson University; Claflin University; and Gammon/ITC.

Mosley is the 15th President of Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA. Gammon is a member if the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), which was founded in 1883.

It is recognized as a top international center of faith-based solutions to the spiritual and socio-economic challenges confronting the African-American community.
