(Updated) District 2 Candidates Debate Tonight

SNAPPS and Concerned Citizens for APS will give residents a chance to hear from the five candidates for Sherrer El's former seat at Brown Middle School.

The Southwest and Northwest Atlanta Parents and Partners for Schools (SNAPPS) will host an APS District 2 Seat candidates forum 6 p.m. tonight at Brown Middle School, 765 Peeples St.

Five candidates are running for the Atlanta Public Schools board District 2 seat previously held by Khaatim Sherrer El, who also served as school board chairman before he resigned on July 11 amidst one of the nation's largest incidents of academic fraud in history, the Atlanta public school system cheating scandal. Voters will select a new District 2 representative on Nov. 8 in a special citywide election.

The candidates are: Michael Jeter, Byron Amos, Dwanda Farmer, Angela Brown and Donald Walker. A sixth candidate, NPU T leader Kwabena "Chubby" Nkromo, withdrew his candidacy on Aug. 14.

The debate will give parents and community members a chance to "hear the next person who will represent our children on the Board of Education," according to an e-mail newsletter from SNAPPS president Shawnna Hayes-Tavares.
