(Updated) Female Morehouse Graduate to Receive New Diploma at Sunday Commencement

Mary Robinson Spivey—first profiled in Cascade Patch on April 20—is scheduled to receive a replacement diploma and Morehouse love at the college's graduation on May 15.

Morehouse College on Thursday announced that 1933 graduate Mary Robinson Spivey will receive a special diploma at the school's 2011 commencement this Sunday.

Spivey is one of a handful of females who graduated from the esteemed all-male institution and, at the time of her attendance, was the only young woman enrolled in day classes with males.

Spivey received a diploma from Morehouse in 1933 before the school officially became an all-male college.

After graduation, Spivey's Morehouse diploma and other artifacts were lost in a fire that destroyed her home.

On Sunday, Spivey will receive a replacement diploma and recognition from the school as possibly the last living female Morehouse graduate (Cascade Patch readers have indicated that there is at least one other female Morehouse graduate still living in the United States, however).

Spivey has already received a Morehouse medallion which she proudly displayed  around her neck Thursday as she participated in a bridge game at the Quality Living Services Center (QLS) in southwest Atlanta.

When asked about Morehouse's recognition of her, the spunky senior replied, "It's about time."
