The First-Ever APS Media Specialist of the Year Award Goes to...

Mrs. Sylvia Pierce from Continental Colony Elementary won the first ever APS library award.

Mrs. Sylvia Pierce and her students at Continental Colony Elementary School, near Greenbriar Mall, are ecstatic to learn that she has just been announced as Atlanta Public Schools' first-ever APS Media Specialist of the Year.

The announcement was first released in the TalkUp APS blog, and states that, "each school system may select one library media specialist for this award," and that, "from those chosen for the school system level award, one media specialist is selected as the district (regional) Library Media Specialist of the Year."

At this time it is too early to tell if Mrs. Pierce will walk away with the regional award, but in the meantime we are celebrating her winning the distinction of being APS' top media specialist.

The APS blog listed a number of reasons for why Mrs. Pierce deserved to win the award.

  • In October, Sylvia Pierce presented library books to parents, students and teachers to use with the Georgia Common Core Math Standards
  • She took a group of Challenge students to see Dan Gutman, the 2012 Milner Award Recipient, at the Georgia World Congress Center
  • She accompanied the Continental Colony Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team in their competition against Drew Charter Elementary School

According to APS, "the state Library Media Specialist of the Year is chosen from the district winners and will be announced at the Georgia Council of Media Organizations conference (GaCOMO) in October."
