Real Men Showed Up In Support for Real Men Read at Dunbar Elementary

Real Men Read is an ongoing program within APS schools, where men within the community read to elementary school students.


The elementary school children across southwest Atlanta love it when its Real Men Read day at their school.  The TalkUp APS Blog explains that Real Men Read is a "reading initiative that is designed to deepen literacy and instill a love for reading in students through mentors who are willing to share a grade appropriate book with a group of students."

The "Real" portion of the program's name stands for, Read, Excel, Achieve, and Lead.

Last week, nearly 10 men visited Dunbar Elementary School with books in hand to read to a classroom of thankful students.  According to Tomiko Cobb, media specialist at Dunbar, "each session lasts approximately 40 minutes, and is a great opportunity for parents and community members to interact with students and have a positive impact on their overall attitudes toward reading."

Most schools have a Real Men Read program coordinator on their campus, so if you are interested and have a particular school in mind you should call that school and lend your support.
