SNAPPS Legislative Meeting Monday Night (Updated)

Southwest and Northwest Atlanta Parents and Partners for Schools (SNAPPS) will host a review of the 2011 legislative session and a school principals' roundtable discussion Mon., Feb. 28.

SNAPPS' meeting, entitled "What's On the Menu this Year? (If we are not at the table, we are on the menu!)" is from 6-8 p.m. at Deerwood Academy Elementary School, 3070 Fairburn Rd.

Organizers say the event will give residents a chance to learn the main issues facing lawmakers and to share their views with local and state elected officials.

In addition, SNAPPS will dedicate a portion of the meeting to a "Principal Roundtable," featuring principals from Deerwood, Bunche Middle School and Fickett and Kimberly Elementary Schools.

Earlier this month SNAPPS began hosting a series of community meetings to step up awareness of public school issues that affect children from the westside neighborhoods in Atlanta.

The organization unveiled a list of demands last week to westside residents to respond to three challenges facing the schools: 1) an upcoming search for a new superintendent, 2) allegations of cheating on the 2009 Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) and 3) the board's Sept. 30 probation deadline to meet six directives and avoid loss of accreditation. 

Though no official date was set to present the demands to the board, SNAPPS plans a series of meetings to focus on the concerns.

The next SNAPPS meeting is set for 6 to 8 p.m., Mon., March 28, at Adamsville Elementary School.
