Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE) surprised 8 educators with a surprise party celebrating their success in education.

Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE) surprised 8 educators with a surprise party celebrating their success in education on October 30th, 2012.

Special guests included Superintendent Erroll Davis and Atlanta Public School (APS) leaders, Falcons players Lousaka Polite and Dominique Franks, and community partners.

3 of the 8 schools/educators who were given surprise parties, were from schools in Southwest Atlanta:
-Kipp Strive
-Young Middle School
-West End Academy (now located at 1445 Maynard Rd, NW, Atlanta, GA 30331)

Cascade Patch attended the impromptu award ceremony given to Dr. Mobley, who is the Principal at West End Academy.  In attendance was Superintendent Erroll Davis and Falcons players Lousaka Polite and Dominique Franks.

Dr. Mobley was awarded a check for $7,500 to be used as such:
- $1,500 for a Professional Development opportunity of Dr. Mobley's choice
- $3,500 for West End Academy School Project, cultivating Leadership Skills
- $2,500 for Dr. Mobley's personal use

"Its people like Dr. Mobley that do the real work. Not me," said Superintendent Davis as he presented Dr. Mobley her check.

As Dr. Mobley accepted her check she fought back tears and told the group of faculty and students in attendance that she, was "honestly surprised and Thank You."

At the end of the video, I asked Dr. Mobley what can our Cascade Patch readers and myself do to support her and the mission of West End Academy. She graciously said, "support comes in the form of mentoring, tutoring, and coming in and having just a warm voice of encouragement."

Congratulations to Dr. Evelyn Mobley, her faculty and staff at West End Academy, and the students for their award.

This is great news; another person in our community working behind the scenes to make our neighborhood great! Well deserved! Our educations deserve any acknowledgment and checks givens.
