Washington High School Community Demands Action to Clean Mold from the School

WSBtv.com has a good report from a community forum Monday night at Lindsey Street Baptists Church, where parents and students gathered to demand action be taken to clean up the harmful mold that continues to build up in Washington High School.

Parents and members of the Washington High band began complaining about the mold and how it ruined their band uniforms over this past summer.  APS made some attempts to clean up the existing mold, but students reported that is was never all gone, and it just came right back after each and every rain.  Raw sewage would bubble to the surface after a hard rain, which we had plenty of this summer.

The official APS stance seems to be that they believe the mold has been treated, and there are not any more new cases of mold or flooding.  Students and parents disagree.

According to the WSB article, "Byron Amos, a school board member, said he, along with school board members Nancy Meister, and Courtney English, emailed Board President Reuben McDaniel to request a special call meeting for the end of the week."

An APS spokesperson released the following statement on Monday in regards to the sewage and mold issues:

“We believe the mold issues at Booker T. Washington High School are residual cases from the initial cases that were reported and not an indication of ongoing mold in the building. The Atlanta Public Schools Facilities Services Department continues to clean any surface mold that is discovered. New HVAC units have been ordered, and temporary units installed until they arrive. As a result of the weather changing to cool and dry, and the installation of the temporary units, the mold issue should dissipate. However, APS will continue to respond to any incidents of mold, if needed.”
