Black Female Republicans: Real Sisters

Not afraid to go against the grain

The most beautiful woman in the world is smart, sexy, independent and of a free mind. Consider that these four women are just that-Lanelle Babbage-Torres, Vivian Childs, Lelia Mack-Hagood and Jennifer Carroll.

Besides their commonality on the adjectives I used, they all have one thing in common-They are black Republicans.

All have risen to heights of influence  and power in a party that is "racist."  Now the most powerful is Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll, retired Air Force, mother, wife and small business owner. Still never been in Essence or Ebony. Never been on the Tom Joyner or Steve Harvey shows and certainly never sat on Oprah's couch. Super Head was on all of above. But I digress.

Lt. Governor Carroll is the second most powerful woman in one of our largest states and you've never heard of her. She has done everything right-school, service, married, kids, now influence. And yet our kids have never heard of her.

Ask your daughter this question-Honey Who would you rather grow and be singer or Lt. Governor? The answer will be a wake up call.

Now  Condi was never featured in Essence either which is why I have to question the tag line-Today's Black Woman. But then again Time Warner has owned the thing for the last twelve years. Liberals. Again, I digress.

Lanelle is founder of American patriots Tea Party. She is hosting a Republican viewing party this Monday at the Fulton County Republican offices in Sandy Springs. She has raised money to protect unborn babies, she has fought to be taxed less and she has been called every name in the book not by Republicans, by you-yet she remains commited to her principals.

Lelia Mack-Hagood is the founder of the Downtown Atlanta Republican Women's Group and is currently the 5th District director for the Georgia Federated of Republican Women.  She is a part of the National & Georgia Federation of Republican Women which is the largest partisan organization in the country.  They  have two meeting monthly- a breakfast and evening meeting.

In the 5th District they currently have members and a presence in Inman Park, Old Forth Ward, Grant Park, Downtown Atlanta and Midtown areas. The club is planning their first major event in October 2011.

Vivan Childs is  the 8th Congressional District GOP chair, on the GAGOP State committee, served on a county’s Executive committee, was the Parliamentarian and a Precinct chair. She is  the President of the Middle Georgia Republican Women, is the Protocol chair of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women, and on the Protocol and Distinguished Guests Committee of the National Federation of Republican Women.

These sisters are REAL black women because, like all true Black women, they dance to their own beat. Their principals come before what others think about them and finally, when they ask their daughters what they want to be - a singer or Lt. Governor.? The answer is always "I want to be you, Mommy."

Beautiful, smart and independent. Now last but not least I am NOT saying that these women are better because they are Republican. I am saying these women are authentic because they believe in a higher principal-that they are not bound by color or victimized by their color. They are free of the plantation and they are trying to free others but they don't know they were on the plantation. Sorry Harriet.

So I salute these women as they pave a road,  a road less traveled. A road that has pitfalls and racism and hatred, all coming from their own community because they dare to think for themselves.

Lastly, consider this: Lt Governor Carroll is the highest state-elected official in the history of this country beside Carol Moseley Braun. And every other Democratic controlled state-New York, New Jersey, California has never had a Black woman higher than a Congresswoman, in  safe, majority-black districts.

In Georgia, Democrats ran the government for 120 years and the highest a sister got was Supreme Court Justice, no small feat but with 90% black support in Georgia by African-Americans and women being a large part of that vote that is all the crumbs you got. (But the Republicans are racist).  Also, the most powerful black woman used to be mayor of Atlanta and she was repaid for her loyalty with a blog. Well, she got more than Maynard. Selah.
