Blog Post: I Learned Everything I Need to Know About Black Atlanta at Friend's Funeral Last Week

All of the black politicians and entertainers that my friend Charles Mathis supported in life should have supported him at his funeral earlier this month. Where were they?

I attended a friend's funeral earlier this month, a person I thought was a friend to so many others.

I know he was a friend to local politicians—especially the young ones who are up-and-comers: Mayor Kasim Reed, City Council President Caesar Mitchell and many others. To support them, over the years, he raised money and held many fundraisers at his home.

However, when it came time to say the final goodbye, many of these politicians and friends who clamored to have our friend, Charles Mathis, host a fundraiser were nowhere to be found.

Here is a man who was a friend and aide to so many—entertainers (Johnny Gill, Keith Sweat, and many others), politicians and even civil rights groups (SCLC-make good on that money that you owe).

So where was the packed out church? Where were all of you? Johnny, you could not sing? Even a quick OOOOh AHHH? For a man who saved you over 20 million?

Yeah, I learned all I needed to about why Atlanta is being taken back by the Tea Party crew after my friend's funeral because the natives are just like their forebears—deal cutters, disloyal and too pragmatic about life and friends.
