Mays Girls Fall in Second Round of Playoffs

The Lady Raiders' quest for state crown ends in a match against unbeaten Lady Tigers; Final score: 80-55.

DOUGLASVILLE - The hopes and dreams of cutting down the nets and raising a championship banner for the No. 3 seed Mays Lady Raiders came to an end Tuesday after losing at No. 1 seed and undefeated Douglas County, 80-55, in the second round of the Class AAAA State Tournament.

In the early stages, it appeared as if both teams suffered from a case of the jitters as they struggled to find an offensive groove. However, once things settled in, it was Douglas County that assumed control and pushed forward toward victory.

The Lady Tigers reeled off a 16-5 run to start the second half, bringing the crowd to its feet and crushing the morale of the Mays faithful.

Mays senior Kristi Ware’s prolific outside shooting cut the lead to 17 following an assortment of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as the Lady Raiders would get, forcing them to board the school bus in sadness.

The Lady Raiders end the 2010-11 season at 17-10. At one point during the year, Mays posted a seven-game winning streak, going undefeated in January. During the Region 5-AAA Tournament, the squad advanced to the semifinals, but lost to Redan, 62-55. They later beat Carver, 58-33 in the consolation game. In last weekend’s first-round match, Mays defeated Flowery Branch 48-42 in overtime.

The Lady Raiders featured five seniors on this year’s roster, including Ware, Charney Sanford, Eboney Freeman, Countiss Miller and Reuna Oliver. However, despite losing the services of these talented players, the squad has a solid core of underclassmen, combined with a strong junior varsity program that will be ready to reload for another title run in 2011-12.
