Camp Best Friends Now Hiring for a Number of Summer Jobs

The City of Atlanta's Office of Recreation will host the 2013 Camp Best Friends program for over 2500 children ages 5 - 18 years old.


The City of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Programming Division is hiring staff to facilitate its Camp Best Friends sites for the 2013 summer! Each summer, they hire large numbers of managers and summer instructors.

If you are over 17, this may be the perfect summer gig for you or a family member.  Hiring will stop on April 15th..

This summer they will be accepting resumes for the following positions:

  • Service Interns (Traditional Camp Best Friends locations) - $10.00/Hr
  • Service Interns II (Camp Best Friends Residential Camp) - $10.00/Hr
  • Service Interns III (Camp Best Friends Therapeutics Camp) - $10.25/Hr
  • Service Interns IV (Summer of Service Learning Teen and Freedom School locations) - $11.25/Hr
  • Service Interns in Training (High School Students Only)


While the jobs are rewarding and fun, there are also huge responsibilities that come with these positions.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Service Interns (Traditional Camp Best Friends): Minimum age for hire is 17 years old; High school diploma or GED required, admittance letter into a post secondary program or track OR some college attendance; Has or is able to attain a valid CPR and First Aid certification; One year of experience working with youth or 3 summers; Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings information and drug tests; Must attend training on May 21 - May 23, 2013 and May 28 - 31, 2013.

• Service Interns II (Lake Allatoona): Minimum age for hire is 17 years old; High school diploma or GED required and at least one year of college; Has or is able to attain a valid CPR and First Aid certification; One year of experience working with youth or 3 summers; Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings information and drug tests; Must attend training on site. Proven abilities in group leadership, public speaking, and interpersonal relations. Residential camp experience (as a camper or staff); Some physical requirements may include: endurance, including prolonged standing, some bending, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight; and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.

• Service Interns III (Therapeutics Camp): Minimum age for hire is 17 years old; High school diploma or GED required and at least one year of college; Has or is able to attain a valid CPR and First Aid certification; One year of experience working with youth or 3 summers; Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings information and drug tests; Must attend training on May 28 - 31, 2013. Must be able to floor activities with campers. Must be able to assist lifting campers in and out of wheelchairs 30 to 80 lbs. Is willing to change diapers of campers 6 to 21 years old. Knows how to or is willing to learn how to do a G-tube feeding to campers. Demonstrates good communication, organizational and leadership qualities.

Service Interns IV (Summer of Service Learning): Minimum age for hire is 21 years old; High school diploma or GED and at least one year of college; Has or is able to attain a valid CPR and First Aid certification; One year of experience working with teens or 3 summers working with youth; Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings information and drug tests; Must attend training on May 21 - May 23, 2013.

Service Interns IV (Freedom Schools): Minimum age for hire is 17 years old; High school diploma or GED and one year of college; Maintain or have graduated with at least a 2.5 G.P.A; Has or is able to attain a valid CPR and First Aid certification; One year of experience working with youth or 3 summers; Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings information and drug tests; Must attend local training May 28 - 31, 2013 and National Training from June 2 - June 9, 2013 in Clinton, Tennessee (expenses paid).

• Service Interns in Training (High School students):
Must enroll with AWDA http://www.atlantaga.gov/index.aspx?page=777
Must be 16 years or older; Has or is able to attain a valid CPR and First Aid certification; One year of experience working with youth or 2 summers; Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings information and drug tests; Must attend training on May 21 - May 23, 2013 and May 28 - 31, 2013.

Camp Best Friends has been serving families throughout metro Atlanta for 30 years. There will be 7 traditional day camps, 9 specialty camps, 2 Freedom Schools, 2 partnership camps and 4 high school teen service learning camps. - City of Atlanta

The 2013 summer season starts June 3, 2013 and ends July 26, 2013. Camp hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily. There is no camp Thursday, July 4, 2013 in observance of Independence Day.

Daily activities for all camps include:
-Integrated Reading -Creative Writing -Recreational Swim  -Instructional Swim - Game Room -Computer Instruction  -Organized Sports -Golf / Tennis Instruction* - Exercise  -Arts & Crafts -Martial Arts* -Dance* -Performing Arts* -Interactive Science*

Fees:
Atlanta Resident / City of Atlanta Employees: $35.00 per week / per child
Non - Resident: $110.00 per week / per child
