Spotlight on Cascade Springs Nature Preserve from your friends at West Atlanta Watershed Alliance

WAWA is working to achieve a cleaner, greener, healthier, and more sustainable West Atlanta.

The following article was sent to Cascade Patch on behalf of West Atlanta Watershed Alliance.

Part of our post-Earth Day activities, WAWA teamed up with our great friends at Keeping It Wild for the “Wild in the City” Hike series at our Cascade Springs Nature Preserve. Everyone enjoyed a leisure-filled Saturday morning hike in the 135 acre preserve. Learning about the local ecology and historical and cultural legacies of the property while getting an opportunity to explore the springs that make up the cascading waterfalls right underneath Cascade Rd. in Southwest Atlanta! As a place of history, the land was the site of the Battle of Utoy Creek, one the critical struggles of the Battle of Atlanta during the Civil War.

WAWA also recently partnered with women of the Atlanta African American Outdoor Adventurers Meet-Up Group and GirlTrek, a nonprofit organization that inspires and supports African American women and girls to live their healthiest, most fulfilled lives, to get their heart rates up on a “Hike for Health” exploring Cascade Springs.

The Cascade Springs hike was a part of a local GirlTrek 8-week walking challenge. Please consider supporting GirlTrek by joining the thousands of Black women and girls across the country who have already committed to walking for better health. Find out more about their efforts here!

We look forward to more “hiking for health” activities in our Atlanta Children’s Forest Network partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, the National Wildlife Federation, and other community partners.
