Safety Concern: Portion of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd Closed

According to the Atlanta police, there is the potential of debris falling in the roadway causing a danger to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Due to an unstable church tower structure at 183 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, the road just west of Interstate 75/85 has been completely shut down to both vehicles and pedestrian traffic between Pulliam St. SW and Pryor St SW.

According to the Atlanta police, there is the potential of debris falling in the roadway causing a danger to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Detour Routes include:

Detour One:
North on Central Avenue, left onto Dodd Ave SW, right onto Formwalt Street, right onto Glenn Street, left onto Central Avenue.

Detour Two:
West on Ralph D. Abernathy Blvd, left onto Windsor Street

Detour Three:
East on Ralph D. Abernathy Blvd, left onto Pulliman Street/Dobb Avenue, left onto Central Avenue.

The Department of Public Works has placed message boards at key locations to assist vehicular traffic along the detour routes.

It's unclear at this time how long the road will be closed.

The building, which was recently condemned by Atlanta city leaders, was built in the 1900s and served as a church for decades until being recently renovated into a nightclub.

Last fall, an accident between a Gwinnett County transit bus and a FedEx truck resulted in both vehicles slamming into the building. The FedEx driver was killed during the accident.
