Dunwoody UMC Dedicates their 20th Habitat for Humanity Home right here in Our Neighborhood

Portia Davis and her young family have the Dunwoody Methodist Church to thank for her new home off of Westlake Ave.

After weeks and scores of volunteers tirelessly building on Porter Drive, right behind Mozeley Park, Dunwoody United Methodist's 20th Habitat for Humanity project is complete and turned over to its future owner.

Dunwoody UMC partnered with Portia Davis, a single mother of three children, ages 6, 4 and 2, to build a home of their dream and to move out of a very small apartment.  As part of the Habitat for humanity program, Portia Davis has put in “sweat equity” during the construction phase and has even helped others in her same situation build their dream homes.

Ms. Davis is an Atlanta native who’s proud to build a house in her hometown. She wants to raise her children in a space they can call their own.

Volunteers from Hickory Flat UMC in Canton, Northbrook UMC in Roswell, Winters Chapel UMC in Atlanta and Simpsonwood UMC in Norcross joined Dunwoody UMC on the build.. Funds raised during the DUMC 2011 Holiday Festival paid for the construction.

What is great about this story is that a young family gets a new house and a place they can call home, but also the community gets a new house.  Before the new house, the lot was overgrown and vacant.  Now everyone sees a beautiful new home and it makes the entire community a little brighter.
