Coming from a long line of educators, Doctor Vivien Davenport, has the natural will to teach in her blood. A Georgia…More native, Davenport decided to act on the heartfelt need to form a school that would better prepare students for global challenges in literacy. Knowing the need for an improved literacy education was necessary after encountering students in college who still lacked a full reading ability, Davenport envisioned a school that would cultivate phonics and reading skills starting at the tender age of two instead of five. Her vision was to strengthen basic educational skills at an early age to assure confidence and higher standards in learning.
Today, The Davenport School at International Preparatory Institute continues to thrive with little girls uniformed in pink dresses and boys in green sweaters. The school is situated high on the hilltop behind the wrought iron gates of the former West End Women's Club. Students two to four year olds and students in kindergarten through fifth grade are serviced, with activities offered in piano, instrumental music, dance, and other after school programs for working parents.
Davenport received her undergraduate degree at Morris Brown College and her Ph.D. from Atlanta University. Davenport is a respected community leader and devoted member of the Southwest Community Coalition and Neighborhood Planning Unit S. She has pledged her commitment to improving the quality of life for children and the metropolitan communities.
