Supporters of Buy Nothing Day are urging consumers to go “cold turkey” when it comes to shopping on Black Friday. What did you do for Black Friday? According to a story in Adbusters.org, abstaining on Buy Nothing Day can give participants a great sense of emancipation and empowerment. Supporters urge that this is the best way to take on the forces of capitalism. A reported 60 counties have signed on to participate this year in Buy Nothing Day. They even have the following suggestions on how to celebrate it: So how will you be celebrating tomorrow? Will you be in long lines taking in the bargains offered by Black Friday doorbusters? Or will you be doing the Zombie Walk or the Whirl-Mart conga line in protest?

They've become such a part of the American economic scene their names are instantly recognizable: Black Friday. Cyber Monday. And the more recent addition, Small Business Saturday, which tries to make sure locally-owned businesses don't get forgotten in the holiday shopping frenzy. This year, some of the grand retail plans have come with an extra helping of controversy. Target stores will open their doors to shoppers at 9 pm on Thanksgiving night, prompting several petition drives in protest. The Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia will be opening, for the first time in its history, at 12:00 am on Friday morning. Lenox Square is also opening at midnight. Black Friday 2012 will be here sooner than ever this year. In a move that has received its share of media attention, Walmart and Target will be vying to get holiday shoppers into their stores even before "Black Friday." Target has just joined other major retailers in moving their Black Friday to Thursday evening. Thursday evening is, of course, the time when many families gather for Thanksgiving dinner. Many people on Twitter heard the news and made comments such as, "#RetailMadness continuing to encroach on a family holiday."
