The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, picks 1,000 students every year who receive scholarships to use at a university or college of their choice.
Fourteen high school students from Atlanta Public Schools, including five from Cascade Patch schools, were named Gates Millennium Scholars. The students from the Cascade area named included: The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, picks 1,000 students every year who receive scholarships to use at a university or college of their choice. Calvin Jones' legacy of coaching excellence and achievement throughout Atlanta extends beyond the basketball court.
One of the nation’s most successful basketball coaching careers in history began right here in Cascade. After graduating from Tuskegee University in 1958, Calvin Coolidge Jones returned to his high school alma mater, Booker T. Washington High, as the girls’ varsity head basketball coach. Two years later, with a won-loss record of 33-11, Jones was hired as head boys’ varsity coach at Carver High, a school with no gym in which to practice. Nonetheless, Jones built one of the best basketball programs in a city just beginning to move toward integration. The parade begins at noon on Saturday at Washington High School.
The 3rd annual Youth Empowerment Parade kicks off in Cascade at Booker T. Washington High School on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at noon. The event is being hosted by the A.D. King Foundation. The parade route ends at the Georgia State Capitol, and then convenes at Morris Brown College and Morehouse College. The A. D. King Foundation is named for the late Rev. A.D. King, a deceased brother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. According to Dr. Babs Onabanjo, president and CEO, the purpose of the parade is to engage youth in civic activities; express appreciation of African-American heritage; become engaged in civil and human rights movements; and create awareness and opportunities for youth mentoring and holistic educational development. Mays, Westlake and Washington honored
Three of the high schools serving southwest Atlanta students have been recognized for achievement in their Advanced Placement programs. Benjamin E. Mays High School, Westlake High School and Booker T. Washington High School were among 367 AP honor schools named across Georgia by State Superintendent John Barge on Tuesday. The 2012 AP Honor Schools are named in five categories, based on the results of 2011 AP classes and exams. Mays and Westlake were recognized as AP STEM Schools. That category includes schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses, according to state education officials. Washington was named an AP challenge school. Powell, wife of former Secretary of State Colin Powell, heads America's Promise Alliance, an initiative seeking to reduce the dropout rate in U.S. high schools.
Booker T. Washington High School in West Atlanta became the first Atlanta Public School last week named a “Promise Place” by America’s Promise Alliance and State Farm Insurance Company. The Promise Place initiative is part of the Grad Nation campaign of America’s Promise Alliance which seeks to mobilize America to end the high school dropout rate and better prepare young people for college and the workplace.
