Local Bridge Clubs Busy This Summer

Members of the Metropolitan Atlanta Bridge Club—an affiliate of the American Bridge Association—have been raising funds, giving scholarships and honoring outstanding members all summer long.

Members of the Metropolitan Atlanta Duplicate Bridge Unit (MABU) have had quite a busy summer. The southwest Atlanta bridge clubs, as well as other metro bridge clubs, also continue to serve as an asset to the community.   "The University Bridge Club" (UBC) held a successful benefit for Morris Brown College, raising over $2000.00 dollars for that institution. Former W.E.B. DuBois secretary Omie Lee Dixon, a member of the "Anne Wood Bridge Club," celebrated her 91st birthday in July and a few weeks later received an award from the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. Southwest Atlanta Bridge Club Benefit for Morris Brown College

Morris Brown College has until August 24, to pay the agreed upon amount of $500,000 to the U.S. Department of Education. The University Bridge Club is southwest Atlanta is helping.

Just as the nation is struggling with deadlines to manage its debt,one of Atlanta’s historically black colleges is also facing a pivotal deadline of its own. Morris Brown College has until August 24, to pay the agreed upon amount of $500,000 to the U.S. Department of Education. The financially-strapped school entered into a deal with the federal education department to forgive $10 million dollars. If the college is successful, it will erase the huge multi-million dollar debt, help the school regain its accreditation, and provide the school the opportunity to begin with a clean slate. While much has been made about the school’s financial problems, the 130-year-old college has quietly and steadfastly moved ahead in an effort to pay this debt…
