Our District 5 Board of Commissioners representative, Emma Darnell told Cascade Patch that something must be done to fight against the latest proposed bills by the republican super-majority in the Georgia House of Representatives. Last week, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted to oppose House Bills 170,171, and 172 which propose changes to the County’s homestead exemption, millage rate, governance structure, and employees’ classification status. In a video interview with Cascade Patch Commissioner Darnell was adamant about the community's need to become aware of the 3 bills that are in danger of passing the Georgia Assembly. This week we are honoring one of our political figures.
Nominate someone special to be our Friend of the Week by emailing me at marc.richardson@patch.com Just send us a picture and a description of why they deserve some extra love and attention! Today, I am doing something a little different and decided to celebrate the work of Commissioner Emma Darnell who represents the Might District 5. I thought it was important to honor her but also her office and co-workers, this week after they opened the new Adamsville Health Center. The Health Center has the postential to be such a game changer in providing top quality health care and social services to a community that desperately needs it. I think the design, and the care that went into the health center is a such a high standard that the facility …

A Fulton County Commissioner asks her south Fulton counterpart to stop disrespecting her and staff, while Emma Darnell says South Fulton voters can't be told what is good for them.
Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann wants her counterpart, Emma Darnell, to show her and county staff some respect, rather than continue to pit North and South Fulton against each other. A two-minute excerpt of the more than 26 minutes of discussion on the Transportation Investment Act of 2012 is embedded with this article. Visit the Fulton County website to view the entire discussion, or the entire archived meeting video. Hausmann sent Darnell - who represents Cascade and southwest Atlanta neighborhoods on the Fulton County Commission - a letter on May 4, two days after words were exchanged during a discussion on the T-SPLOST amendment. After receiving a copy of the letter, Darnell responded that no politican can tell residents what …

Living longer and remaining healthier, male seniors thrive in southwest Atlanta.
At the Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility, the "Real Men of Darnell," as they are called, celebrate their status as seniors, not only during the month of May—National Older Americans Month—but throughout the year. While the Darnell facility, 677 Fairburn Rd., is a gathering place for men and women, it's been noted that males play a leadership role at the center as both volunteers and participants. The men are leaders in the plays and musicals, the fashion shows, the adult daycare program and in working the parking lot for major functions (they like it when you call them big “parking lot posse.”) In addition to volunteering, the men regularly play pinochle, bid whist and bridge and participate heavily in water aerobics, …
