Darnell Calls HB 171 the "Re-Segregation Bill"

House Bills 170,171, and 172 will directly hurt minorities if passed, says District 5 Commissioner, Emma Darnell.

Our District 5 Board of Commissioners representative, Emma Darnell told Cascade Patch that something must be done to fight against the latest proposed bills by the republican super-majority in the Georgia House of Representatives.  Last week, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted to oppose House Bills 170,171, and 172 which propose changes to the County’s homestead exemption, millage rate, governance structure, and employees’ classification status. In a video interview with Cascade Patch Commissioner Darnell was adamant about the community's need to become aware of the 3 bills that are in danger of passing the Georgia Assembly. Commissioner Darnell refers to House Bill 170 as the, "Fulton County Destruction Bill."  She explains …

The legislation is the slow execution of a plan to "take back" control of government and move to privatization of most aspects of government. Simply observe the game plan 1) gerrymander or redraw district lines to insure governmental control 2) increase homestead exemption which will reduce tax revenues, which causes deficits (i.e "the problem") which creates the need for a solution with will be …   more ›

Emma Darnell, District 5 Fulton County Commissioner, answers the top 10 FAQ's about Tsplost with truth and facts.

As the debate on whether to vote for or against TSplost heats up, Emma Darnell our District 5 Commissioner has released a very easy to read guide to the debate. Commissioner Darnell has boiled down the debate to the 10 most asked questions. These questions can be heard over and over again at every neighborhood meeting and every Transportation briefing, center around the jobs claim, the effects it will have on MARTA, and the traffic congestion claim. (of course costs are always an issue as well) Please take a moment to read Commissioner Emma Darnell's response to these issues below. JOBS 1. When will the “200,000” jobs be available to the unemployed? Proponents say that by 2040 T/SPLOST “will support” 200,000 jobs. There is no evidence to …

There certainly is a Plan B but the Plan B options would be just as unpopular as the transportation referendum. The Regional Transportation Referendum is not a perfect list but it goes to serve the needs of the region since so many of us travel beyond the county where we reside in and since improvements made at one place will affect another county. Other alternatives would include unpopular …   more ›

Southwest Atlanta Friend of the Week: Commissioner Emma Darnell

This week we are honoring one of our political figures.

Nominate someone special to be our Friend of the Week by emailing me at marc.richardson@patch.com Just send us a picture and a description of why they deserve some extra love and attention! Today, I am doing something a little different and decided to celebrate the work of Commissioner Emma Darnell who represents the Might District 5.  I thought it was important to honor her but also her office and co-workers, this week after they opened the new Adamsville Health Center. The Health Center has the postential to be such a game changer in providing top quality health care and social services to a community that desperately needs it.  I think the design, and the care that went into the health center is a such a high standard that the facility …

Photos & Video from The Historic Adamsville Health Center Grand Opening

Hundreds attended the Adamsville Grand Opening this afternoon.

The Adamsville Health Center's new state-of-the-art all encompassing facility was on full display at today's Grand Opening party.  The New Adamsville Health Center is located at 3700 Martin Luther King Dr. in Southwest Atlanta. Emma Darnell, Vice-Chair, District 5, Fulton County Board of Commissioners, led the proceedings and made sure to thank and congratulate everyone in Fulton County that had a part in building the center.  The building is something for the community, and Emma Darnell was proud to say that it was in District 5. Everyone that spoke at today's ribbon-cutting spoke about how serving the community with health related benefits was one of the most important tasks that Fulton County completed in the past years.  While other …

Darnell Accused Of Pitting South Fulton Against North

A Fulton County Commissioner asks her south Fulton counterpart to stop disrespecting her and staff, while Emma Darnell says South Fulton voters can't be told what is good for them.

Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann wants her counterpart, Emma Darnell, to show her and county staff some respect, rather than continue to pit North and South Fulton against each other. A two-minute excerpt of the more than 26 minutes of discussion on the Transportation Investment Act of 2012 is embedded with this article. Visit the Fulton County website to view the entire discussion, or the entire archived meeting video. Hausmann sent Darnell - who represents Cascade and southwest Atlanta neighborhoods on the Fulton County Commission - a letter on May 4, two days after words were exchanged during a discussion on the T-SPLOST amendment. After receiving a copy of the letter, Darnell responded that no politican can tell residents what …

Cascade Seniors

National Older Americans Month and the Men of Darnell Senior Center

Living longer and remaining healthier, male seniors thrive in southwest Atlanta.

At the Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility, the "Real Men of Darnell," as they are called, celebrate their status as seniors, not only during the month of May—National Older Americans Month—but throughout the year.  While the Darnell facility, 677 Fairburn Rd., is a gathering place for men and women, it's been noted that males play a leadership role at the center as both volunteers and participants. The men are leaders in the plays and musicals, the fashion shows, the adult daycare program and in working the parking lot for major functions (they like it when you call them big “parking lot posse.”) In addition to volunteering, the men regularly play pinochle, bid whist and bridge and participate heavily in water aerobics, …
