The huge fire on Marietta Street WILL affect your morning commute. Expect road closures, delays in the area. The business on fire is United Transmission Service located at 350 Marietta Street.  The Atlanta Fire Department is on the scene, but no word on the cause of the fire. Plumes of smoke could be seen from morning joggers in Piedmont Park all the way to the AUC.

We live across from the Fox Theatre and the smoke is THICK and acrid. Rolled in like fog, quite quickly around 7:45. Went outside with the dogs and about choked. That's a pretty bad smoke covering. Hopefully the wind picks up soon.   more ›

Large Fire at Recycling Plant Near West End Mall Now Under Control

A large fire and its billowing smoke could be seen for miles around on Wednesday afternoon.

The Atlanta Fire Department has said that a large debris fire broke out on Wednesday around noon at Pirkle Inc., located off of Metropolitan Pkwy at 598 Wells St SW.  The fire sent brown smoke up in the air and could be seen from miles away. The Atlanta Fire Department Information Officer, Janet Ward, indicated in an on-site briefing that the fire was mostly out, and that it started after workers accidentally caught some debris on fire.  Ward says that there were workers doing some welding, and that they accidentally caught some refrigerator insulation on fire, which eventually spread to the large piles of flammable materials that are found at recycling centers. Firefighter Injured Battling Blaze on Verbena Street in Dixie Hills

A family lost their home in the early morning fire on Verbena Street

The Atlanta Fire Department has confirmed that one of their firefighters was injured while helping to fight an early morning fire on Verbena Street on Thursday morning. The department has said that the injuries are not life threatening, but have yet to say what the exact extent of his injuries are and what was the cause, reports CBS Atlanta.  Firefighters told CBS Atlanta News they believe the fire started in the furnace at the Verbena Street home just before 4 a.m. The Dixie Hills home was completely destroyed and a man and his teenage son were able to escape the blaze.

UPDATED: Cause of Fatal Fire was "Faulty Wiring" Plus Home Had No Smoke Alarm

Scarri McNeal died of smoke inhalation.

A 20-year-old man, Scarri McNeal, died of smoke inhalation Saturday following an early-morning fire on Campbellton Road. Fire Investigators have determined the cause of the fire to be electrical. Fire investigators say that they, "did not locate any smoke detectors in the residence at 4185 Campbellton RD, SW." A neighbor spotted the smoke and called firefighters close to 2:30 a.m. By the time they arrived, flames already were visible through the roof. Pre-Dawn Fire Burns Vacant Home on Metropolitan Parkway

No injuries have been reported from the early morning fire.

The Atlanta Fire Department responded to an early morning fire near Metropolitan Parkway and Deckner Avenue at 5:30 a.m., Friday morning. According from a report in the AJC, firefighters were initially surprised by how many additions were done on the house and how large it actually was, especially the attic space.  Fire Chief Todd Edwards told the AJC, “the problem we encountered is this is an older building that has plaster ceilings and walls, so the fire was able to get into the ceiling and ran all the way through the structure,” Edwards said. “Biggest fight was getting the ceiling down to get up into the fire area itself.” The owner of the home in the 1400 block of Metropolitan Pkwy has recently died, and the home was listed for sale.  …

Former Hotel on Fulton Industrial Burns to the Ground

Firefighter tried to save the former InHome Suites, but were unsuccessful.

Atlanta Fire Fighters responded early Tuesday morning to a call of an abandoned building on fire near the edge Southwest Atlanta. The abandoned building was once the InHome Suites located at 660 Interchange Drive SW, near the corner of Martin Luther King Dr. and Fulton Industrial Boulevard. Firefighters were forced to let the building burn to the ground, as the flames encompassed the entire building upon their arrival at 1a.m., according to a CBS report.  The fire department has said that they were still at the scene this morning inspecting and putting out any hotspots that arise. More than 5 Families Lose Everything in Early Morning Apartment Fire on Delowe Dr.

More than 20 people will be displaced after Wednesday morning's apartment fire at Alison Court Apartments.

The holiday season was almost all ruined by an early morning fire that ripped through the Alison Court apartments located on Delowe Drive, just north of Langford Parkway in Southwest Atlanta.  More than 20 people are expected to be displaced by the fire, reported the Red Cross. Several families have told the AJC that they lost everything including Christmas gifts for the children and all of their major and minor possessions.  In one case, the AJC is reporting that a family says that there was more than enough time for Atlanta Fire Fighters to save the apartments, but that they had a faulty hose with holes in it.
