Future Leaders Needed to Serve as Fulton County Youth Commissioners

The deadline for submission to become a Youth Commissioner is Friday, May 17, 2013.

In a letter to NPU-T residents, Reginald Crossley of the Fulton County Youth Commission said that there is a need for future leaders to get involved and become Youth Commissioners. "Young people are needed who want to serve others while researching and identifying potential solutions for issues that affect the quality of life for youth in the County," says Crossley in his written statement. The program is for students that are naturally concerned about the economic, political, and social future of themsleves and others in the County.  According to Crossley, "students accepted into the program will impact policies and legislation, interact with elected leaders on the local and state levels and speak out on behalf of all Fulton County youth…

Most Fulton County Homeowners to See Lower Property Taxes in 2011

Board votes not to raise millage rate.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has voted to keep the General Fund millage rate at 10.281 mills, according to a county news release. The board vote last Thursday means most homeowners will see lower property taxes for the Fulton County portions of their property taxes in 2011, due to lower assessments and a $5,000 increase in Homestead Exemption for qualifying Fulton County residential property owners. The Board has maintained the 10.281 millage rate since 2007, which is 24% lower than the millage rate in 2000, according to the statement from Jessica A. Corbitt-Dominguez, a spokeswoman for the county. Fulton has the second-lowest General Fund rate among metro Atlanta counties, and is the only metro County that has not increased …

County Commission Ratifies Development at Cascade/I-285 Intersection

Sluggish economy is likely the last hurdle to a town center being built on a long-dormant site

Fulton County commissioners agreed Wednesday to allow developers to build a town center at the southwest corner of Cascade Road and I-285. The vote was unanimous, 5-0, in favor of allowing homes and a commercial core in the 3500 block of Cascade Road, near the decades-old Cascade Driving Range. There was no comment from commissioners or county officials, or from the large audience gathered to comment on the county budget that is to be approved later this month. The vote likely ends a 20-year controversy over development at the site. The only possible impediment to development – other than market conditions -- would be a lawsuit the property owners could file to challenge the rezoning. The developer's original plan called for 87 more …

Despite Notices, Media No One Attends Special Fulton Commission Public Hearing Wednesday; Service Fee Increases Approved by Board

New fees likely to take effect Feb. 1; No opposition during public hearing Wednesday with Fulton County commissioners

Residents and merchants of south Fulton County can brace themselves to pay more for certain county services starting Feb. 1. Fulton County commissioners held a public hearing Wednesday to hear comments about the proposal to raise certain fees and implement 18 new fees. No one said a word. No one even attended the meeting. Not at the main Fulton County commission room, nor at the county's satellite center in College Park. Commissioner Robb Pitts evidently was stunned by the silence. Pitts stopped the proceedings and asked if the public had been notified of the meeting. Yes, the public had been notified, responded Rob Hernandez, Fulton's deputy county manager for south Fulton. Hernandez said the hearing was announced in the Atlanta Business …

Patch Readers Post Lively Comments on I-285 and Cascade Development; Final Council Vote Wednesday

Fulton County Commission taking final vote on project Wednesday morning

Fulton County commissioners are set to ratify new zoning Wednesday for a town center with homes and a commercial core at the southwest corner of Cascade Road and I-285 in the Cascade Heights area. The site, in the 3500 block of Cascade, has been mired in controversy for about 20 years as the developer clashed with the commission over what type of project could be built. Over the last few days, as the decision date has come closer, Cascade Patch readers have chimed in on our site with a range of strong views both for and against the project. Here are some of the comments posted: "I'm not opposed to development in the community but quite frankly 'no trash.' Extremely high to high income level and before anyone builds anything, the traffic …

I love this site! Cascade traffic is not all that bad- but I do understand the concern. I'm a woman on the go, I would love to stay closer to home to shop, this would save definately save my family gas. I live in the off New Hope and I can remember before the Southwest Arts Center opened how residents were concerned about traffic and increase crime rates. I would advocate about the type of …   more ›

County to Take Final Vote Wednesday on Development at Cascade/I-285

Fulton County commissioners are set to ratify a plan to build a town center in the 3000 block of Cascade Road

Fulton County commissioners are set to ratify a town center with homes and a commercial core at the southwest corner of Cascade Road and I-285. The site has been mired in controversy for about 20 years as the developer clashed with the commission over what type of project could be built. Even now, it's not clear when – or if – a development will come out of the ground. Michael Hightower, a former county commissioner who represents the developer, declined to comment on construction plans. Hightower now is managing partner of The Collaborative Firm, a land use planning and development firm. Hightower's reticence may be a result of restrictions on the proposed project that were imposed by the county commission. The developer could file an …

I grew up in the Cascade area and have watched it came a very long way. What I would like to see is more town center type of development. Something simliar to Atlantic Station or the Shopping center on Edgewood on the 59 acres. Then give our community With Resturants like Atlanta Bread Company and Maggio's Along with clothing Boutiques. Then do the same across from the Home depot along with a …   more ›
