April is National Minority Health Month. This year’s theme, “Health Equity can’t Wait: Act Now in Your CommUNITY!”, is a call to action and unity for the nation to get involved and invested in reducing health disparities. Since 2009, Fulton County Health and Human Services has been providing integrated services to residents in an effort to address health disparities and assist them with living healthier lifestyles. “Fulton County continues to address health disparities that affect some of our communities more than others,” states Patrice A. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and Fulton County Health Services encourages all women to take control of their health by cervical cancer screenings known as Pap tests.
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and Fulton County Health Services encourages all women to take control of their health by cervical cancer screenings known as Pap tests and to make healthier lifestyle choices. Fulton County has at least 3 locations, including Adamsville Health Center, in/near SW Atlanta to make screening easier and cheaper. Symptoms of early stage cervical cancer or pre-cancer are not easily identified and often have no signs or symptoms. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, it was estimated that 134 Georgia women would die from cervical cancer in Georgia in 2012. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for cervical cancer in women ages 21 to 65 years with cytology (Pap …

Free HIV tests available this week in Southwest Atlanta
World HIV Day is celebrated December 1st around the world as a day that we educate and try to change peoples' thoughts about the disease. Fulton County comprises 10 percent of Georgia’s population and accounts for 54 percent of the state’s AIDS cases. There are a number of free HIV screenings happening in southwest Atlanta for community members to take part in. Fulton County Health Director honored as one of Atlanta’s 'Most Influential African-American Doctors.'
Patrice A. Harris, MD was recognized as one the top 25 influential African-American doctors in Atlanta on September 22nd at the 2012 National Black Health Awards Banquet. Dr. Harris is the Director of Fulton County Health Services. She is responsible for the oversight of public health, behavioral health, and primary care services provided for county residents. A licensed psychiatrist, Dr. Harris joins an elite group of African-American doctors who have made significant contributions to medicine, research and their respective communities.

The Fulton Department of Health and Wellness is providing flu shots at seven centers from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm.
Flu season is around the corner. Fulton County Health Services encourages everyone to get vaccinated, especially children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. Nearly 300 people cam to get tested and to know their HIV status.
June 27th is the National HIV Testing Day, and Fulton County Health Department offered free 20-minute HIV tests at West End Mall and Hurt Park to hundreds of people. Related: HIV Rate Doubled for Black Women in Fulton County The rate of HIV cases has skyrocketed over the past decade, much due to people being unaware that they have the disease. To counteract this, the national push is for people to, "Know Your Status."
