The 86 year-old father, grand-father, businessman, and civil rights icon, Jesse Hill Jr., passed away on Monday, December 17th with his family at his side.

Editor's Note: In response to Monday's news of Jesse Hill Jr. passing, Congressman John Lewis wrote this letter to Cascade Patch readers remembering his long-time friend and supporter. Other members of the community shared their thoughts as well, in the original article. “I first met Jesse Hill Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1960s. He was a tireless fighter for civil and human rights. He conducted voter registration efforts in Atlanta long before the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. Michael Johnson, Running Against John Lewis, Speaks out on Gun Laws Following the Colorado Massacre

Michael Johnson, candidate for the 5th District, says we need stricter Gun Laws.

Michael Johnson, who is running for John Lewis' seat as the 5th District U.S. Congressman, briefly answered a few hot topic questions over the weekend. We first asked him what he thought needed to change after such a horrible massacre in a Aurora, CO theater.  Like President Obama stated last week, Michael Johnson said that "it is very clear that we need to have a discussion about gun control."  Johnson went on to say that assault weapons need to be better controlled because, on the streets, they are only "made to kill people." Our second question has been posed by many who question why Michael Johnson is attempting to run against Civil Rights hero, John Lewis.  To that, Mr. Johnson a former Superior Court Judge says that he believes the "…

Rep. John Lewis says, "There is a Deliberate, Systematic Attempt to Suppress the Vote" in this Election

John Lewis says there is currently a plan to suppress the minority vote all across the United States.

Rep. John Lewis, who is the United States Congressman from the 5th District of Georgia, partook in the Shrine of the Black Madonna's Candidate Forum over the past weekend.  The Honorable Congressman made news when he announced that he believes, "there is a deliberate, systematic attempt to suppress the vote (in this election)." Rep. John Lewis, speaking in front of dozens of Southwest Atlanta supporters said that Republicans are, "trying to steal the election, even before it gets started." State legislatures across our Union have introduced a variety of "Voter Law" bills which have come under scrutiny because of their limiting nature.  Some of the Voter Laws have been called a "Poll Tax" by civil rights leaders like John Lewis. Even here …

Cascade "Names in the News" - Beverly Isom, Communications Dir. for Rep. John Lewis

Beverly Isom, of Sandtown, is John Lewis' Campaign Communications Director

Rep. John Lewis' campaign for re-election campaign is in full swing, and at the center of the communications and messaging lies the Sandtown resident, Beverly Isom. Beverly Isom is the former Communications Director for Mayor Shirley Franklin, and over the years has talked at a number of schools about her career and her passions.  From my brief discussion with her, I can report that Ms. Isom is not one to hold her tongue.  She tells you like she sees it, and with no rose colored glasses. As I was jokingly saying that her current boss, Congressman John Lewis, was a "sure-win," she quickly stopped me.  Beverly was adamant in her belief that there is a young generation that needs to be educated about John Lewis and what he has done.  "That's …
