City Again Postpones Vote on Xernona Clayton Way and John C. Portman Boulevard

Council votes 9-5 to refer renaming of Cone and Harris streets back to a committee

After an emotional debate spanning several hours, the Atlanta City Council again tabled a vote on renaming downtown Cone and Harris streets in honor of two well-known, living Atlantans. The council voted 9-5 to refer back to a committee a proposal to rename Cone Street to Xernona Clayton Way, in honor of the media pioneer, and Harris Street to John C. Portman Boulevard, to acclaim the Atlanta skyline architect.  Council member Kwanza Hall, who represents the much of downtown community where the streets are located, also introduced a new plan to impose a 6-month moratorium on any Atlanta street renaming (see attached letter).
