Southwest Atlanta will have a new charter school in the 2011-12 school year, as the Atlanta Board of Education Monday evening approved a petition from the KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) Charter Schools. The decision came during the board’s legislative session, as speculation continued regarding board chairman Khaatim Sherrer El’s resignation. “Though open to students from the entire district, the petitioner's primary targeted enrollment is for students residing in southwest Atlanta, primarily in the West End, Westview and Beecher-Donnelly neighborhoods and surrounding communities,” said outgoing school superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall. This 12-year-old KIPP WAYS Academy pupil is not your typical honor student; she fell down at first but she got up, again and again.
Alexus Taylor—a KIPP WAYS Academy Junior Honor Society member—is not your typical scholar. She fell down, at first. But she got up. When Alexus, 12, came to KIPP WAYS two years ago she was reading on the 2nd grade level. Education specialists said she needed help with her speech. Alexus wasn't supposed to succeed. "Alexus was terribly stricken by the idea of her ever achieving in anything," recalls Happi Dawsey, KIPP's Director of Special Education. Alexus failed her 5th grade state CRCT exams and she didn't attend the summer school remedial classes that would have allowed her to take the tests again.
