SW Library Proudly Displays Rare Jacob Lawrence Art Collection

Jacob Lawrence, is one of the most well known African American Artists,

On a Tuesday evening in late May 2012, a standing room only crowd packed into the Southwest Atlanta Library on Cascade Road to see a very rare treat up-close and personal. It is not widely known that one of the great treasures of African-American art and art in general, lies right here on Cascade Rd.  Jacob Lawrence is the preeminent black artist of the 20th century, and we are lucky to live so close to such a collection that Southwest Library now owns and proudly displays. The John Brown Series is a collection of paintings depicting the life, triumph, and death of abolitionist John Brown.  The colors and the style of the work shows off Jacob Lawrence's brilliance and vision, at the same time as it educates the viewer about a subject that …

West End Library Participating In Atlanta Fair

Cascade-area students can win a chance to attend the Atlanta Fair on March 31.

The West End branch library is participating in an inaugural literacy campaign, designed to promote reading among children ages 2-11. The Atlanta Fair at Turner Field is sponsoring the campaign, entitled Read & Win, in which children are encouraged to head to participating Fulton county libraries and begin reading. For every 10 books checked out, read and returned to a participating library, children will receive an honorary blue ribbon mark for their library book logs to signify their participation. The student who submits a library log containing the highest number of blue ribbons by the close of business on March 23 will be the  winner of the Read & Win challenge. In an exclusive interview, boxing icon talks with Cascade Patch about "The Big Fight," his personal story of sexual, drug and alcohol abuse.

The fans of legendary boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard Saturday started lining up more than an hour before his scheduled book signing at the West End Branch of the Atlanta Fulton County Library. By the time of the scheduled noon signing, the line stretched out of the building and down the steps to Peeples Street. Leonard signed copies of his new autobiography, “The Big Fight” - My Life In and Out of the Ring” (Viking). Most of the media focus about Leonard's autobiography has been about his admission that he was sexually abused by two of his former trainers when he was a teenager.
