Emmanuel Lutheran Church Welcomes New Pastor

Atlanta native and Spelman graduate is first female to lead congregation

The new year means new leadership for Emmanuel Lutheran Church in southwest Atlanta. The church, at 3050 Cascade Rd., welcomed its first female to lead the congregation. Beverly Brown Shaw, an Atlanta native and graduate of Spelman College, will serve as transitional pastor effective Dec. 1. Shaw, who has held membership at Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Atlanta, will serve in that capacity anywhere from six to 12 months until a permanent pastor is named. She replaces Rev. Peter L. Samuelson, who served for seven years as senior pastor of Emmanuel.  Shaw could end up with a permanent position — either at Emmanuel Lutheran or another Lutheran church within the Southeastern Synod for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). …
