Many residents are still bothered by the murder that occurred on Beecher near Cascade.
The video above was shot at a NPU-T neighborhood meeting, where residents tried to get clarity on the whether a suspect had been captured for the murder of a young man on Beecher. The Zone 4 Commander could not go into details because the case was still active, but did say that a suspect has been identified. He also told the group, that the incident was not a random shooting. Concerned residents also questioned the Commander about new technologies to help residents and police officers to respond to gun shots in the area. Residents are urged to call APD whenever they hear gunshots, even though they may not know exactly where they are from. The Atlanta Police Department is actively looking at new technologies that will be able to help …

NPU-T President called a press conference to educate the media about the the number of individual neighborhoods that make up SW Atlanta.
Claiborne White, the incoming 2013 NPU-T Presidents called a press conference on December 14th for the purpose of educating the media about the various neighborhoods and the individualism that there is in Southwest Atlanta. According to White, the media constantly covers stories in this large area, but instead of noting the neighborhood they only say Southwest Atlanta. Southwest Atlanta is composed of roughly 97 individual neighborhoods and covers roughly 33 sq. miles. To him and other residents in attendance, by not naming the exact neighborhood of a crime or of an incident, and by just labeling this whole area as SW Atlanta, makes it seem like everything bad happens in this scary place called "SW Atlanta." White would rather the media…

Organizers say they are, "concerned with the rise in violent crime in specific areas, as well as the possibility that our communities as a whole are being portrayed as unsafe."
Part of the aftermath of last week's shooting death of a young male on Beecher and Cascade Avenue, has been that community representatives from NPU-T have had enough of what they see as false reporting from the major TV news stations. Clairborne White, the newly elected President of NPU-T is organizing a press conference at the site of the recent murder to begin a discussion with the news media about our neighborhoods and the individualism each of our neighborhoods display. White feels that too many times, the news media lumps all crime into coming from SW Atlanta instead of stating the actual neighborhood the crime was committed. "In other parts of the city, they (TV news crews) say so and so was killed in Grant Park, or Midtown, or in …

Zone 1 Commander reports to NPU-T residents about November/October crime stats.
Atlanta Police Commander for Zone 1, Ofc. Quiller, reported to NPU-T members that crime has slightly risen over the past month. Commander Quiller also shared how Zone 1 officers intend to police and protect citizens during the holiday season, when robberies tend to trend higher. Currently the increase in robberies has been the result of "opportunity crimes." Crimes in which the criminal sees the victim walking down the street with expensive headphones, cell phones, or laptops and attempts to rob them by snatching their items and running. Quiller says the easiest way to avoid becoming a victim in this manner, is to not "show-off" your goods and to walk in groups. NPU-T covers the majority of the West End and AUC. You can join NPU-T by …
Residents receive news and holiday tips during the recent November community meeting.
NPU-T holds its monthly meeting during the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The latest meeting was held outside on a cold evening due to a loss key, but was one of the most attended community meetings I have been to. Although the meeting was abbreviated because of the weather conditions, in the following video you will hear the Atlanta Watershed's announcement on what NOT to put down the drain during the holidays. Hint: No turkey or ham grease. Our drains at home are not made to accept grease, and could cost you money in the long-run. In addition, Councilwoman Cleta Winslow was in attendance and asked community members to write Mayor Kasim Reed and express their need and desire to have Fire Station #7 re-opened and available to serve the …

Businessman Terry Porter was murdered outside his home on South Gordon, Police still need your help in solving the case.
Zone 4 Commander Rodney Bryant, briefed NPU-T neighbors about the 2 recent murders that both occurred on S. Gordon Street in Southwest Atlanta. Late last week the Atlanta Police Department released video of a person of interest. The person was seen on camera driving in the victims stolen SUV, but the vehicle was discovered abandoned at a Midtown apartment complex just days later. Officer Bryant tried to calm questions from residents in the area about whether the 2 crimes on South Gordon were related at all. Bryant said that at this time there is no evidence that would show that the 2 were related, and in fact the one of the crimes (not the murder crime of Terry Porter) was committed by a family member and they have a warrant for the …

Greetings Community! I hope this will find you all well. I have been praying, and like many of you- working hard for the restoration of our communities and safe neighborhoods. As with anything, the more we pray and work the more we are met with additional challenges. During the past few weeks NPU-T and other Southwest neighborhoods have experienced an increase in crime. These crimes have lead to the loss of great people working on our behalf. Please join us as we persevere, as a community, to obtain information from our Police Department and other community servants of how we can continue to be safe. Zone 1 & 4 will also have updates on the recent activity. Council-member Cleta Winslow will be present and provide information from her…

Mi Joy, This press conference addresses part of the problem. In breaking news, Oakhurst, Buckhead or Virginia Higlands are identified by name not by their quadrant of the city. "SW Atlanta" has close to 100 neighborhoods within its border. SW Atlanta is not a neighborhood and should not be identified as such. There are beautiful people in the neighborhoods of SW Atlanta working to makethem more …   more ›
