Wednesday, March 6
More than half of Fulton County's high schools can proudly proclaim that they are "AP Honor Schools" and leaders in offering students the most challenging curricula available. What is most exciting is that 3 of the recognized schools pull from students that live in southwest portion of Atlanta. On the 2013 AP Honors list were 3 schools that Cascade Patch readers know well. Banneker High School and Langston Hughes High School were recognized for high math and science achievement, and Westlake High School was highlighted for a third consecutive year. These schools are recognized as AP STEM Schools, a category that recognizes schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses. The 2013 awards are based …

Westlake High School is a diverse and prominent institution of learning located in southwest Atlanta, Georgia.
Several college admission professionals stormed Westlake High School in Southwest Atlanta for their annual activity with the 12th grade students there. No, it wasn't a college fair. This was the annual "Prepping for College Day" that is held while the other grades are taking the PSAT. Representatives from several Georgia Colleges and Universities including: Emory University, Dalton State, Clayton State, the Directors of Admission from both Spelman College and Andrew College and even a representative from the Iowa City based testing company, ACT, were on hand to help seniors think about the college application process in different ways. "It is important that students meet people like this. Students have to realize that these professionals …

Friday, October 5, 2012
(submitted by E. Gwyn) Dear Westlake Families and Staff, I am excited to share with you recent success story for our school... Westlake High School was awarded a $75,000 grant from AT&T and Communities in Schools. This grant allows Westlake to provide additional support and services to our ninth grade students and their families. As many of you might agree based on your personal experience with your ninth grader...the educational research shows that students may struggle at times in their transition from middle school to high school. In fact, students who fail courses in ninth grade are more at-risk for having excessive disciplinary problems and ultimately dropping out of school. The AT&T/Community in Schools Grant will allow our school to…

New Westlake High School football coach Stanley Pritchett began spring practice this week. But he also found time in his busy schedule to answer a few questions from Cascade Patch: What attracted you to the Westlake job? Well, I grew up in the southwest Atlanta area so i know the tradition and legacy of Westlake and I felt like it was the perfect fit for me. What are you looking for in your first week of spring practice? During spring practice I'm looking to build a foundation for the program. I'm also looking for tough minded guys that are looking to compete and get better each day. And lastly I'm looking for guys that make plays on both sides of the football. You had a career in the NFL, including with the Atlanta Falcons. Does that …
