Local Woodward Academy Student Wins Scholarship for his Incredible Violin Talents

The Georgia District of Kiwanis Art and Music Showcase provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their talents in a competitive atmosphere.

Andrew Koonce is a 9th grader at Woodward Academy, a talented violinist, and a member (for the second year) of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is a violinist. This year, Andrew Koonce, a Fulton County resident- whose parents are members of the Metro Atlanta Kiwanis Club- was the First Prize winner of the $3,500 music scholarship. The Georgia District Kiwanis Foundation provided a total of $15,000 in Educational Scholarships - $7,500 in the Art Contest and $7,500 in the Music Contest.  The first-place award in each contest received an educational scholarship in the amount of $3,500. Cascade Student Wins Musical Theatre Award

Olivia Washington is a student at Woodward Academy.

Woodward Academy junior Olivia Washington recently won the 2012 Shuler Hensley Award for featured performer for her role as Motormouth Maybelle in the spring production of Hairspray. Woodward was also nominated for awards in the orchestra and music direction categories for Hairspray. The Shuler Hensley Awards honor musical theatre excellence at the high school level. The program is an initiative of the ArtsBridge education program of the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Foundation.

Southwest Atlanta Junior Nominated for Award

Woodward Academy junior Olivia Washington was recently nominated as "featured performer" for her role as Motormouth Maybelle in the spring production of Hairspray for the Shuler Hensley Awards, the Georgia High School Musical Theater Awards. Washington lives near the Niskey Lake community in southwest Atlanta. Woodward was also nominated for awards in the "orchestra" and "music direction" categories for Hairspray. Forty-two high schools from 12 counties, representing 14 school districts as well as private schools from throughout Georgia participated this year. Two SW Atlanta Students Win Princeton Recognition

Two Woodward Academy students have been named Atlanta area winners of the 2012 Princeton Prize in Race Relations.

Woodward Academy juniors Morgan Foreman of Cascade and Amy Dam of southwest Atlanta, were recently selected as the Atlanta area winners of the 2012 Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Both Foreman and Dam have contributed to projects sponsored by the Academy’s Upper School Five Points Club, a special interest club focused on embracing diversity as an integral part of being a caring community of lifelong learners by building and maintaining a diverse, accessible, civil and supportive campus. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations was developed to promote harmony, understanding and respect among people of different races by identifying and recognizing high school age students whose efforts have had a significant, positive effect on race …

Three Decades Later, Niece Wears Woodward Academy Uniform

On Monday, the second generation of Poes entered Woodward Academy. Tears came to my eyes when I saw my oldest niece, Ryann Poe, in a uniform almost identical to the one I wore in the late 1970s.

I cannot express the emotions that went through me Monday morning as my smart, beautiful and oh-so-Valley Girly niece Ryann emerged from the Upper School's Dean's Office of Woodward Academy. There she was, wearing the same blue WA polo top and crisp skirt that I wore (with none of the smarts, class and non-regional English that comes so easy to her, mind you) some 30 years ago. Ryann Poe, 14, is continuing what is now a "tradition" in my family. She is a pursuing her high school education at Woodward Academy, established 111 years ago in College Park as Georgia Military Academy. As I, Class of 1981, walked the campus with my brother, Brian, Class of 1984, I took note of how so much had changed and how so much had remained the same. The …
