Atlanta Public Schools has just released a list of projects that will affect schools in the 2013-2014 school year.
Bunche Middle School and Sylvan Hills Middle School are just 2 schools in the APS system that will be undergoing renovations in the upcoming 2013-2014 school year that will affect the student body. TalkUp APS, has created a full list of schools that will have renovation and construction work done during the next school year. According to the list, Bunche Middle School students and staff will be, "temporarily relocated to the old Archer High School during the renovation of Bunche MS in Fall of 2013." Students and Staff at Sylvan Hills Middle School, "will merge with and be relocated to Parks Middle School during the construction of a new Sylvan facility," says APS. The Act, Listen, and Learn Program encourages kids to “say ‘YES’ to a healthy lifestyle and ‘NO’ to underage drinking”.
On Wednesday morning, September 12th, United States Olympian Tyson Gay visited Sylvan Hills Middle School in Southwest Atlanta to talk to students about under-aged drinking and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. With his Silver Medal in hand from the 2012 Olympics, Tyson encouraged students to fight against peer pressure, and to not follow people that are "so-called cool." Tyson shared personal stories and memories of his times in middle school when he saw his friends begin drinking, and the sadness he has now for those old friends because they were never able to reach their potential. A unique non-profit is showcasing young African-American males this week who want to learn the national pastime.
Three Cascade schools will be the site this week of an effort to not only bring young African-Americans into baseball, but provide a foundation of values to last a lifetime. C.J. Stewart, a former Major Leaguer who got his baseball start through the Cascade Youth Organization, is founder and CEO of L.E.A.D. (Launch, Expose, Advise, Direct). L.E.A.D. is hosting its second annual signing day events for its middle school developmental league from Monday, March 12, through Wednesday, March 14. The events are designed to replicate the atmosphere created when high school students sign letters of intent to play for major colleges, only at the middle school level. B.E.S.T.
