It's that time of the year again! The Atlanta chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated will host a free Stork's Nest prenatal and parenting workshop during the 15th Annual Stork's Nest Blitz: Baby and Health Fair. The fair will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at The Mall West End from 12pm to 4pm with the prenatal workshop beginning at 1:30 pm in the community room (basement level of the mall). The baby and health fair is free and open to the public. Activities will include various fun movement and dance exercises inspired by our First Lady Michelle Obama “Let’s Move!” campaign. Atlanta police has warned street vendors that they will be enforcing the city's no vending on public property law during the Final Four Weekend.
A week before arguably the busiest weekend of the year in Atlanta, the Atlanta Police department has released a notice to street vendors that officers will be enforcing the no vending on public property laws during the Final Four. In a prepared statement, Police Chief George Turner said, "our officers are respectfully letting anyone attempting to sell or display goods on the city sidewalks know that vending on public property is no longer authorized in the City of Atlanta; and that to continue such activity would be in violation of the city’s ordinance." On the eve of the July 31st elections community members will gather to hold a prayer vigil at The Mall at West End.
The July 31st election is just days away, and members of the West End community want leaders to know that the neighborhood is serious about ending violence. On Monday, July 30th at 7pm, the eve of election day, a coalition of Youth, concerned citizens and civic leaders from around the metro Atlanta area will gather for a candlelight peace and prayer rally in the East Parking lot of the Mall West End. The purpose and intent of the demonstration will be to bring awareness to the community regarding violence committed by young people and to appeal to the city for unified peace. Tuesday afternoon, police received the call that a man was shot in his chest and arm in West End Mall.
UPDATE: The man that was shot in West End Mall has died of his injuries. His name has not been released. Accroding to the AJC, witnesses say that, "the incident happened inside the Subway restaurant at the mall and spilled outside to the parking lot." The suspect got away in a silver or gray Pontiac. West End - Early police reports indicate that a man was shot in the chest and arm outside of West End Mall. According to the AJC, "He was transported to the hospital alert, conscious and breathing, according to authorities." No further details released, as yet, This is the 3rd incident in recent months. The most recent a police shooting that killed 1 person.

9:00 p.m. Wednesday night an APD officer shot and killed a suspect at West End Mall
A suspect was shot and killed by an Atlanta Police Department officer on Wednesday night at West End Mall in Southwest Atlanta. (Note: This happened just hours after we left the mall and covered the Free HIV Testing Event that was such a nice event and attended by 200 or more people.) According to WSB-TV, a witness told them that he, "just saw the truck at the front, and then the police pulled in, I think maybe three, and they jumped out and yelled, 'Freeze,' and a little after that, I heard the shots and people started running towards us,". Nearly 300 people cam to get tested and to know their HIV status.
June 27th is the National HIV Testing Day, and Fulton County Health Department offered free 20-minute HIV tests at West End Mall and Hurt Park to hundreds of people. Related: HIV Rate Doubled for Black Women in Fulton County The rate of HIV cases has skyrocketed over the past decade, much due to people being unaware that they have the disease. To counteract this, the national push is for people to, "Know Your Status." HIV has hit the African-American community in Fulton County so hard, that I felt like I had to highlight this free testing event and actually partake in it.
